Hey guys! Have you heard about my crafty book challenge yet? Only a few of us signed up, but you can sign up ANYTIME this year & I really hope more join in!

I’ve started working on a list of crafty books you can read for this challenge, but I need your help! Please let me know of any books that will count so I can add them to the list!

I also wanted to mention, if you haven’t grabbed a copy of Kathryn Vercillo‘s new book, Crochet Saved My Life, she’s offering my readers a 20% discount code! It’s good until the end of June so you have plenty of time to buy a copy & now you have no excuse not to! It sounds like a few of us will be reading it together on my Ravelry group, if you’d like to join us!

Now, onto the list of those who are joining us so far – and if I missed you, please PLEASE accept my apologies & yell at me all you want to!

Crafty Book Challenge

Hello, crafters and readers!

I’ve been racking my brain, trying to either find another book challenge to join (since I joined one challenge, I might as well join another) or come up with one. Driving into work this morning, I had a lightbulb moment… why not start a crafty book challenge? DUH!

I’ve never hosted a challenge before, so ask me any questions. I’ll add to this post as needed :)

Once a month, I’ll write up a blog post inviting everyone to talk about what craft related books we’ve read in the past month, catch you up with any reviews, and do shout outs to anyone who’s also read & written a craft book. I’ll set up a page for this challenge & include a list of some book ideas to get you started (please leave a comment if you know of any!)

Sign up anytime, challenge runs all year.

The rules:
* any crafty related fiction book counts, whether it’s quilting, knitting, crocheting, sewing, embroidery, scrapbooking, etc.
* pattern books for the most part, are excluded, with a few exceptions: books by Elizabeth Zimmermann that are very chatty & contain stories, not just patterns, will count IF you read cover to cover. I won’t be policing you, so use your own judgement.
* non fiction craft books, such as “Crochet Saved My Life” are included (haven’t picked up the book yet? Go to https://www.createspace.com/3928868 and plug in coupon code 76K89G9K for 20% off). Thank you, Kathryn!
* any format is fine: ebook, print book, audio book, reread
* yes, you can also cross over to other challenges, if you like
* reviews are not necessary, but would be very nice for the authors (on your blog, on goodreads or amazon, wherever)
* I’ve started adding a list of crafty books that count for this challenge

If you are a blogger, please write up a blog post talking about the challenge, include the button or header graphic I made above (I’m sorry, I don’t know how to do the fancy code so you can just grab it) and link to this post at http://anastaciaknits.net/2013/01/12/crafty-book-challenge/ so that others can find out about this challenge & join in! When writing up your post, please be sure to tell us how many books you want to try to read!

Non-bloggers, you can join in by commenting on your goals!

I am planning on reading 7 books this year – the only one I know I’ll read for sure is Crochet Saved My Life.

2012 goals – what did I accomplish?

It’s that time of the year when bloggers from around the world write about their goals from the past year, and what they’ve accomplished, and I’m no different.

A year ago I wrote up quite the challenge/goal list for myself, and posted it to this blog. This is something I do annually, but have only started posting said goals on the blog recently. In fact, reviewing my posts from January 2011, I don’t see any challenge post at all.

To recap:

6 afghan designs
1 afghan for the Alzheimer’s Raffle, like we did this past year
30 hats & / or scarves for the charity through Mom’s work
6 lapghans for charity (may or may not be my own designs)
finish the sock yarn afghan — this is my biggest goal this year…

So, what did I complete?

(OK, I spent an hour trying to create a mosaic of my 4 afghan designs, & for whatever reason, only 2 would show up. I redid tags, checked that the photo was available to view to all, etc etc, and I still have no idea why the mosaic wouldn’t load all 4 designs. So I should have just made a mosaic with the 2 photos that would load, but that would have made sense)

I designed, stitched, and published 4 afghan designs this year – the Wells Ripple, the Ogunquit Granny, the Scrap Ripple (which I still need to post to this blog, right now it’s only available as a free Ravelry download), and the Valley Bridge afghan. Technically only 4 – but I also wrote up 2 6″ square designs, 2 12″ square designs, and several Warm Up America blocks, so I’d say I completed the first challenge successfully.

Next is the Alzheimer’s Afghan, this is what I made this year…
afghan1
Though we didn’t raise as much money as last year, we still raised over $300 for Alzheimer’s research.

Next is kind of a mixed bag – no one through the charity group ever bothered to pick up the hats & scarves I had made, so at the last minute, all the winter stuff I had made was donated to a lady my parents know at church who does missionary work. According to Ravelry, I stitched up about 27 scarves, mainly crochet & quite a few of them Tunisian. I have no record of any hats being made, but I do remember making a few so I must not have ever photographed them. So I think I made my goal.

Next… the lapghans… well, I completely blew that out of the water. I made a TON of afghans this year & have enough squares made to put together probably 8 more this year, and have about half of 2 more afghans done. I have 15 finished afghans finished & photographed on Ravelry, and have one more finished that still need the ends woven in & to be photographed. So I think I made my goal, too.

the sock yarn blanket – well, sadly, other than being yanked on my bed every night, it hasn’t been touched. at all. Ever since I found the hole in it, I just haven’t been able to face touching the thing. It’s officially the massive UFO.

- PS – Kathryn of one of the best crochet blogs out there, Crochet Concupiscence, is giving away her CROCHET book, “How Crochet Saved my Life” this weekend only, for kindle. Don’t have a kindle? There’s lots of free apps that can help you read this book on any device. And if you download, please help Kathryn out by either writing a review of the book, pinning on pinterest, or tweeting about the book.

book challenges: 2013 Outlander Reading Challenge

I honestly didn’t think I was going to join any book challenges this year, honest I didn’t. I signed up for a few one year & after the first couple of months, completely forgot all about them. Let’s face it, being organized & following through on things are NOT my strong suit.

But, on a Novel Challenge, a blog I follow (even though I swear I won’t join challenges) posted a new challenge that I just couldn’t resist…

outlander4edited

I love this series, have since the very first book that I read in the series. I remember shopping with my mother at a local retail store, long out of business, buying clothes for back to school, when I saw the cover & instantly bought Voyager. I was hooked from the first page & immediately hunted down the first two books in the series.

Just the other day, browsing through the library, I saw the latest book in the series & remembered I never did read that one, and then I started thinking about how the next one will be due out soon, and the thought sort of got stuck in my head … until tonight, when I saw the challenge. Yup I’m in! I’m pledging to:

reread Breath of Snow and Ashes (Outlander, #6)

and then read Echo in the Bone (Outlander, #7) and hopefully Written in My Own Heart’s Blood (Outlander, #8)

2013 goals

This is the time of year when everyone & especially bloggers, seem to talk about what they accomplished & what their goals are for the next year.

I’ll at some point write up a recap of last year & how I did with my challenges, but not today :) .

I did want to share my goals for next year. I tried to be more realistic then I’ve been in years past, but still challenge myself a little.

First, design goals:
* continue to submit. This is really tough for me, but last year I started to submit & I’ll write more about that later, but it’s important to me that I continue to try.
* at least LEARN about advertising outside of Ravelry. I may not actually do so, but I want to start figuring out what my options are & where to advertise. Anyone have any experience with this? Care to share?
* self-publish at least 12 crochet patterns & 3 knit patterns. Yes, I said knit! It’s good for me, as a designer, to get outside of my comfort zone.
* complete my crochet master’s through the guild, finish my knit & crochet certification, & at least explore other avenues of teaching (locations)
* get back into blogging. Yes, I know I’ve been really lazy this year with blogging, between my site being down for a couple of months, & starting to teach, the blogging’s gone by the wayside, but I think it’s very important as a designer that I maintain an online presence besides on Ravelry
* continue to donate patterns as prizes when opportunity arises – I’ve felt from the very beginning that this is very important to me, both for me personally & as a design business
* Run another cal on my Ravelry group. Something “big” ??

Craft goals:
* learn to weave. yes, I really want to do it this year! Even if just on little loooms!
* hairpin lace. I have quite a collection of hairpin lace (vintage) looms & I’d really like to explore this craft more
* continue to concentrate on charity projects as much as possible. My “main” charity goal this year is a dozen patriotic afghans to donate to local veterans by Veteran’s Day. I’ll continue to make afghans for the local nursing homes & to whoever else needs them, and like I have the last several years, leave myself open to whatever other charity projects may come my way

Other goals:
sad to say, none really, other than to try to read more this year – I managed 32 books/audiobooks for 2012, which is not at all bad considering I work full time, teach when I can, & run a design business. This ties with 2009, is a little worse than 2010 (40, my best year since I started keeping track) and is much, much better than the FOUR I read in 2008. I’m not going to set a goal other than to read more, so, let’s see 36 books for 2013!

halfway point

It’s just about halfway through the year, so I wanted to write down how I am doing so far on my goals:

Cut & pasted from original post (bolded), with notes

Goals for next year:
* Knit or crochet 131 cat shelter blankets in memory of Zorro, one for each month he lived with us.
IMG_4960
Chain Stitch Square pattern (free download)

The above is definitely my most important goal, and I’ve finished about 70 or so for the year with some in progress, assorted various patterns, so I think I’m right on target!

* Knit or crochet at least 26 hats for the homeless

Only 3 hats so far have been made, but I did make 2 scarves & several of my sample shawls were donated.

* Continue making the odd blanket or two for nursing home residents (goal of say, 10)
boys coin quilt afghan
I had to check Ravelry because I wasn’t sure how many I had actually finished, but I’ve actually made 9 so far. The above is my favorite (my Coins Quilt free pattern). I am planning on continuing to design a few more afghans, & the samples will then be donated, either to a nursing home, or raffled off / auctioned off for charity.

* Continue knitting/crocheting for charity as the need arises

Nothing so far. One afghan in progress to be donated to the New England Falcon Club of America raffle for their August show (not really for charity, but still…)

* Make 2 pairs of socks for dad – one for Father’s Day, using the yarn I gave him at Christmas, and one pair for Christmas 2011. Make 1 pair of socks for mom for Mother’s Day, using the yarn I gave HER at Christmas, and possibly a pair for Christmas. Make 3 pairs of socks for Jon; probably one to just give him, and 2 for Christmas. Make 3 pairs of wool-cotton blend socks for me, using scraps I’ve been saving, & at least 1 pair of worsted weight wool slipper socks, to replace the badly felted pairs.

pair for mom for Mother’s Day is done, 1 pair of cotton anklet socks for me, done

* Try the cable resolution again: 3 small cabled projects.

None so far!

* Finish the sock yarn afghan

Have worked on this a smidge – I’d guess I added about 20 squares to it.

* Finish the Moorish Crochet afghan
IMG_3915

Done!

* Finish the Around the Twist afghan, and write up the pattern. Possible KAL.
Ha! I’m still working on it. I was actually doing well on it & started sewing up the squares, but I still need to finish about 4 squares & sew it up. It’s a big blanket, done in garter stitch, and 100% wool. The pattern is written up, I do need to draw a little schematic for it & I cannot draw straight lines!

* Finally make Jon a sweater. This needs to be a priority in my personal, non charity, non designing craft time!
Ha! Still hasn’t happened, and I don’t expect it will. I’ve always wanted to make him a sweater, but he just doesn’t wear them.

* Finally get my act together & do some serious sewing.
I did do some sewing – I still want to sew – but I really just don’t have time!!

* Read 52 ya/adult books new-to-me, and 25 additional “younger” books, rereads, or audiobooks. Try to read more fan fiction, which I love but never seem to actually read. Utilize the kindle!
Not sure how many I’ve read, I haven’t updated my excel spreadsheet in a while so you’ll have to read all my reviews to find out how many I’ve finished!

* Continue blogging at least one review per week, keep up with In Your Mailbox (helps keep me organized), and write one craft post a week, probably WIP Wednesday or Fiber Friday.
Well… I’ve dropped In Your Mailbox. I figured no one really cared what books I got from the library or in the mail or d/l to my kindle & I really seldom get books in the mail & even less often buy them. I think I’ve done pretty good with a review a week & a craft post a week, though!

* spin more.
did spin a bit this year, but not a lot.

* use my slow cooker more.
I was actually using it quite a lot for a while, but haven’t used it much lately. I’m not sure why, but every time I use the slow cooker, let’s just say I get sick. Doesn’t matter what I cook.

Not on my list, but other things I have managed to accomplish:

I self published 16 patterns so far this year, 8 paid patterns & 8 free patterns, with 2 patterns due to be published by the Crochet Calendar later this year, and 6 more patterns in various stages of testing/editing.
Spring Stripes Scarf
Spring Stripes scarf – a very easy, summer scarf pattern, written for 2 widths, skinny & regular, and also available as a kit !

Fiber Friday cat blankets- chain stitch squares

It’s Fiber Friday/ Friday FO!

IMG_4959

Ever since I saw this pattern on Ravelry, I’ve been dying to make this square. I knew it would be perfect upsized into a kitty blanket.

IMG_4958

Some of these are made as-written, most are about 14″ square, with a few bigger or smaller for a wide range of kitties :) .

IMG_4957

You can download the pattern for free here, but please remember designer Mary Lokken did design this for the charity Knit a Square.
IMG_4955

Most of these are actually rectangular; I started with a chain of 6 or 8, I believe, & basically followed the pattern as is,

IMG_4953

but this makes a rectangular blanket which I think is better for the kitties in shelters.

Details: used up scrap/leftovers of mainly acrylic yarn, all machine washable, mainly worsted, using a variety of hooks/needles, mainly G, started in May finished in May

IMG_4954

I love the jewel tones in this one…
IMG_4956

The whole pile altogether…
IMG_4960

With this last stack, I’ve finished 49 blankets for the cat shelter in memory of Zorro.

And a lapghan for the local nursing home:

Fiber Friday / FO Friday – freeform blankets

It’s Fiber Friday/ Friday FO!

Some recent freeform cat blankets I finished
IMG_4961
I really like this one, it’s a little bigger then what I make for “regular-sized” kitty blankets

IMG_4962

And…
IMG_4952
(close up- you can see this one has a knitted swatch with a stitch I was playing around with, instead of frogging the swatch I used it for the blanket. One of the reasons I love freeform!)

IMG_4951
I really don’t like this one, but it will help a kitty stay warm, I hope. You can see I used up the square from the failed blanket attempt :) I knew I’d use it up in something!

And another one

close up…
IMG_4950
I like this one, too. The colors work well, don’t you think?

Details: used up scrap acrylic yarn, mainly worsted, using a variety of hooks/needles, mainly G, started in May finished in May

Full sized lapghan/small freeform afghan for the local nursing home, in guy colors

100% acrylic, G & H hook

Mainly crochet with small knitted sections, started in May & finished in June

The scarf has been finished, too!

More blankets next week!

Rock Garden gloves new pattern

This is a pair of fingerless gloves I designed for the Designer’s Challenge on Ravelry & won second place!

rock garden gloves

The theme was “garden,” it had to be a foot or hand accessory, and you had to use both sc & dc. Everyone went with the obvious, flowers; but I immediately thought of a rock garden, and this was the design I came up with. They are definitely a little out of the ordinary!

You begin with the sc ribbed cuff, sew or slip stitch the seam, turn the cuff sideways & begin working the pattern, joining after each round. The only seam is in the cuff.

Thanks to daughterofartemis, redcurlysue, sueburkitt, TanyaRC, merripurdy, Crochooked, & HSULadybug for their test crocheting skills! And many more thanks go to Susan Moskwa (http://www.rogueedits.com) for her tech editing skills!

IMG_4137

Feel free to make as many of these as you like for local craft fairs/auctions/raffles/bazaars, but please do not sell finished items online. The pattern itself is not for sale. If making for charity, please let me know the name of the charity & include my contact info with the item (http://anastaciaknits.net / anastaciaknits on Ravelry). If you have any questions or comments or just want to join like-minded souls, please join my Ravelry group athttp://www.ravelry.com/groups/anastacia-knits-designs. Thanks!

For sale for only $5! Pattern includes two sizes, 6.5″ & 7″.
